2022 Virtual Archaeology Field School

Greeting from the Archaeology lab,

Last week, students from around the United States logged in to participate in the Virtual Field School at Strawbery Banke. The curriculum focused on methodologies for crowdsourcing and conducting remote archaeology. Throughout the week, students read a variety of scholarly articles and watched videos on archaeology at museums, public archaeology, and learned artifact preservation techniques.

Each student came up with a research question, from invasive plants to front doors to favorite pizza restaurants. They then conducted their own mock archaeological surveys by crowdsourcing pictures and geographic locations from friends and family around the United States, and compiled their results using ArcGIS and StoryMaps.

Here is an example StoryMap (https://arcg.is/18P589) I made to showcase the 30 locations in the United States students joined from!
